The Story of Strange Resonance is in five parts, each designed as a kind of sonic perfume that lingers and slowly evolves. The constantly shifting waves of sound reward careful listening, but may also work to establish the feeling and atmosphere of a space, working on the unconscious as attention drifts and is pulled back. The title refers to a technique by which one sound, rather than being heard directly, can serve the function of a resonant space for another sound. For this work, the resonant spaces are derived from very brief passages of orchestral music, while phrases of medieval vocal music are “played” in that strange space. The result is a kind of genetic engineering of sound, where characteristics of one element are fused with another.
